Kirstin was born with three birth defects and spent 31 days in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Since that time, she has been hospitalized nearly 40 times battling respiratory problems.
Kirstin’s mom, Ingrid, has much to say about the Sanford Children’s Hospital employees that cared for her
daughter. "I can’t begin to explain or thank the Sanford employees that have worked with Kirstin and our
family over these past years. I will begin with the employees at Sanford Children’s Hospital. What an
awesome group of people they are!! Mary and Dee at the front desk recognize my voice when I call and
always make me feel so comfortable. When Kirstin was younger and her respiratory conditions could change
so quickly, they would immediately get in touch with Dr. McKercher. They have been so supportive and
friendly to us throughout these past years".
"We are truly grateful for Dr. McKercher and his staff. There is no way we will ever be able to say
enough thanks for them. Their quality of care, professionalism, efficiency and concern has been so
appreciated by us. They truly care about their patients and families. It’s probably hard to believe,
but I enjoy seeing them at our office visits. Kirstin absolutely adores Dr. McKercher. He has developed
a very special relationship with her - - one where she does not fear him at all in the hospital or clinic.
I think that is just remarkable a 4-year old feels that way about a doctor. I consider all the employees at
Sanford Children’s Hospital my friends".
"The employees at Sanford Children’s Hospital are appreciated by our family also. We have gotten to know
the Peds floor very well and they always make Kirstin feel welcome. From the nurses, Child Life specialists,
the respiratory therapists, X-ray staff, social workers, ER staff, and the triage room - - everyone has
always attended to Kirstin’s needs quickly and efficiently with a caring attitude".
"So, our journey continues. She has cut the length of her hospital stays to 3 days or less and doesn’t
need much oxygen anymore. We pray she will continue on this positive path. However, we fell extremely
confident that when the time does arise and Kirstin needs clinic or hospital help, we are confident Kirstin
will receive the best quality care at Sanford facilities".
