Emotional Wellness

When one hears the word "health" one often thinks about the physical body. Health is also about mental, emotional and spiritual wellness. These areas influence each other and maintaining all three is an important part of balancing overall health.

Mental health is defined as how we think, feel and act as we cope with life. Emotional wellness is demonstrated by the overall comfort with and acceptance of one's full range of feelings. It determines how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Positive emotions such as happiness, amusement, excitement, contentment and love contribute to our overall sense of well-being.

How we handle our emotions matters; chronic negative emotions such as depression, stress or anger can harm our physical well-being:

  • Chronic anger has been associated with elevated blood pressure and increased risk for heart attack
  • Depressed patients are less likely to take their medication and take other healthy lifestyle steps to protect themselves from heart disease
  • Unmanaged stress can create elevated levels of stress chemicals which can result in high blood pressure and an increased risk for heart attacks.
