Parenting Classes

You have parenting questions? We have answers. Parenting in today’s society is filled with rewards, challenges and opportunities to learn about yourself and your child. Along the way one may have more questions then answers on the “how’s”, “why’s” and “what’s” of parenting. Parenting classes available through Sanford Children’s CHILD Services gives you an opportunity to find your answers.

Classes are offered on such topics as:

  • Baby Signs
Studies have shown that hearing infants who learn sign language talk sooner and have larger vocabularies, stronger parent/child bonds, and less frustration, crying and tantrums. Signing can also increase baby’s self-esteem and gives parents a window into their child’s early temperament.

  • Challenging Child Behaviors
Have you ever wondered what may be behind those behaviors that most challenge you as a parent? Do you ever feel like you’ve just figured your child out and then they become someone completely different? This class will look at some “triggers” to challenging behaviors and how we can prevent, reduce or calm them.

  • Bedtime Battles
Helping children develop good sleep habits can be achieved using gentle, responsive methods. By exploring some of the potential roadblocks and working with children’s individual “clocks”, parents can learn to implement a personalized plan that works best for their family.

  • From “Stop that” to “You Did It!” – Positive Discipline Techniques
As parents, it’s easy to feel frustrated by a child’s unwanted behaviors. In this class, we’ll gain an understanding of the importance of positive reinforcement and techniques for encouraging behavior change. • Temper Tantrums Temper Tantrums can be trying at any age. Learn how to avoid them, and tips on dealing with them.

  • Keeping Your Cool
This class will focus on ways that we, as parents, can keep our emotions in check when dealing with the behaviors of our children. Whining, talking back, and defiant behaviors can all push us to our limits. We’ll explore ways to keep our cool, while guiding our children to more desirable behaviors.
