Project 8 Governor's Car Seat Program

Project 8's goal is to keep kids safe by making sure they are in the best child seat for their height and weight.  Kids should remain in a car seat until they are at least 8 years old because it is at this age that children often reach 4'9" and weigh more than 80 lbs.

Income eligible families can receive free child seats through the Project 8 program with proof of eligibility.

Income Eligible Car Seat Distribution

Project 8 distributes car seats to income eligible families across South Dakota as well as those who have children with special needs.

Child Safety Seat Distribution Guidelines

  1. Parent/Caregiver must be a South Dakota resident.
  2. Parents/Caregivers must show some proof of financial assistance prior to receiving a seat. (Examples of types of financial assistance accepted include: WIC card, Medicaid card, food stamps, Child Care subsidy, Head Start eligibility, etc.)
  3. Each child receiving a child safety seat must be present at the time the seat is provided to be properly fitted for the seat. Recommendation: Expectant mothers should be within two months of their due date when receiving a seat.
  4. Parents/Caregivers are required to receive instruction on how to properly install their new seat prior to leaving the agency with the seat.
  5. Child safety seats are fitted to each individual child and are expected to follow that child. No more than one seat will be provided to a child under any circumstances.

Project 8 is a statewide program. Our office covers 16 counties, with Project 8 community partners in the follow counties; Clay, Davison, Douglas, Hutchinson,  and Minnehaha.
