Infant Toddler Services

The first three years of a child’s life are extremely important. From brain research, we know that this is a prime time for building a foundation for social, emotional, physical, intellectual and language development. Children learn through relationships therefore, responsive care is vital for future learning.

The Infant/Toddler Program follows the philosophy of the WestEd Program for Infant/Toddler Care which believes that good care for infants and toddlers involves the caregiver being in tune with children's cues and that learning is child-directed, not adult-directed.  The Infant/Toddler Program is committed to improving the quality of care for infants and toddlers in child care.

Trainings:

  • Training opportunities for licensed or registered child care providers to meet mandated training requirements.

Infant/Toddler Certificate Program

Caring for infants and toddlers takes a special set of skills and knowledge. The Infant/Toddler Certificate offers an individual an opportunity to receive training specific to this age group which will allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the significant development which occurs in these early years of life.

In addition, the training hours included in the Infant Toddler Certificate will count toward licensing training hours, Pathways training hours and upon completion of the entry level training, the participant may qualify for an Infant Toddler Mini-Grant.

How do I earn an Infant Toddler Certificate?

How much does the Certificate cost?

The entry level training classes cost $40 for the 20-hours of training. After you have completed the 20-hours of entry level training, you may be eligible for a $200 mini-grant. This grant can be used to cover the cost of the Infant/Toddler Certificate or to purchase materials and resources to enhance the care you provide to infants and toddlers. The advanced block of 45 hours of Child Growth and Development costs $300. The Division of Child Care Services has scholarships (South Dakota Pathways Scholarship Program) available to those who qualify, to help cover the cost of the training.

Is there additional training after the Infant Toddler Certificate?

The South Dakota Child Development Associates Credential is a nationally recognized credential which is offered through the local ECE offices. The 45 hours of training in Child Growth and Development for the Infant Toddler Certificate articulate into the SDCDA Credential. What this means is, when you complete your Infant Toddler Certificate, you are half way to completing the training hours for the national credential!
