Child Development Associate (CDA)

What is CDA?

A Child Development Associate (CDA) is an individual who has successfully completed a CDA assessment and has been awarded the CDA credential.

The Child Development Enrichment Program at Sanford Children’s CHILD Services is an approved training site for those who are pursuing their CDA.

The CDA credential is a nationally recognized early childhood professional credential awarded by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition based in Washington DC.

Childcare providers who earn the CDA credential have attended 120 hours of training and have demonstrated their ability to nurture young children's physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth.

CHILD Services offers classes to provide child care providers the 120 hours of training needed to earn their CDA credential.

Renewing Your CDA

Continuing Education Units (CEU) for CDA Renewal

The Council for Professional Recognition now requires proof of continuing education if students want to renew their CDA credential. The proof must be in the form of either 4.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or a 3-credit hour college course in early childhood education/child development, principles of adult learning, mental health counseling, etc. This additional training/course work must be after the student’s original credential, or since your last renewal. CEU’s are units awarded for participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. They are non-credit educational experiences. One Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is ten (10) contact hours of study.

It is the responsibility of the CDA student to keep track of when to renew. CHILD Services does not maintain renewal dates and will not be notifying the student when their expiration is drawing near.

CHILD Services offers 3-5 CEUs per year. Typically CEU's may be available at Statewide child care provider conferences which may include but are not limited to…

  • Family Child Care Professionals Conferences
  • Statewide Head Start/SDAEYC Conference
  • South Dakota Director's Association Conference
